Lautering is a critical step in brewing, primarily aimed at separating crushed grains from the fermenting liquid. This process occurs within a specialized vessel known as a lauter tun, equipped with a crucial component called a false bottom. 

Various types of false bottoms are available, with wedge wire screens being a prominent choice in the market.

The primary function of a false bottom is to support the mash bed and contain the grains above the vessel's floor, while allowing the liquid wort to flow through. Traditional materials like perforated or slotted sheet metal can encounter issues such as clogging or displacement, leading to decreased flow rates or compromised filtration.

Wedge wire screens offer distinct advantages over other materials. They feature a larger opening area with precise slot sizes, ensuring a high flow rate of wort. 

Their superior mechanical strength effectively supports the grain bed, reducing the risk of bending or displacement during lautering. This enhances efficiency by preventing grain entrapment and maintaining optimal lautering speed.
